Can guinea pigs eat basil?

This is a question that many people ask themselves when they are gardening. The answer, unfortunately, is no. Basil contains some toxic substances that can be harmful to the health of your pet if ingested in large quantities or on a regular basis.

Keywords: Guinea Pigs, Basil

Summary: Guinea pigs cannot eat basil.

Furthermore, it is not recommended to feed them any plants that are toxic for humans. These include onions and garlic (which can cause anaemia in guinea pigs), as well as chives, scallions, potatoes with green tops attached, tomato leaves and cherry tomatoes among others.

Keep the list of prohibited foods short so your pet does not get bored or develop a food aversion! What should I do if my guinea pig has eaten something on this list? Bring him/her to the vet immediately!

If you’re too far from one then try calling ahead first; many vets will provide instructions over the phone about what they would recommend doing at home.
